The figures in the table are based on areas including internal bodies of water such as bays, lakes, reservoirs and rivers. With the average population density in Europe in 2006 estimated at 114 inhabitants per km 2 (Eurostat, 2011), the population density dataset was classified into densely populated areas (>100 inhabitants per km 2) and into sparsely populated areas (<100 inhabitants per km 2). The list also includes unrecognized but de facto independent countries. The list includes sovereign states and self-governing dependent territories based upon the ISO standard ISO 3166-1.
